Many people and web-sites state that Degner Curve marks the site of Ernst Degner's fiery crash on Lap 1 of the 1963 Japanese Grand Prix (10th November 1963).
This is completely incorrect.
Degner was very badly burned when he crashed his factory Suzuki RZ250 on the exit of Turn 1. Degner was last of the grid and was trying too hard at Turn 1. He crashed on the exit and there are many photographs proving this point.

Named after Ernst Degner, 1962 50cc Motorcycle World Champion who crashed his factory Suzuki on 3rd November 1962 in the Senior 50cc race of the first All Japan Championship Road Race. In those days, Degner #1 and Degner #2 formed part of a continuous curve. When heeled over on this curve, the strong cross winds got beneath the front of the lightweight Suzuki and lifted the front wheel clear of the ground. Crash!

CORRECTION: Amazingly, Rosberg DIDN'T have to retire! If you see his crash, you will see that it's a miracle that he didn't! He did come last though, 6 laps after the winner (Vettel) and 3 laps after second-to-last.

This is where Setil's engine failed at the 2010 Japanese Grand Prix - loadsa smoke appeared then lots of oil was thrown out of the engine onto the track, Setil spun out but managed to get back to the pits, where he retired.
Also, Rosberg crashed here in the same Grand Prix at 130mph - he either spun out on Setil's oil spill (see what I did? :D), or there was a mechanical failure with his rear left wheel. It was quite a major crash, and Rosberg did have to retire. I don't think he was hurt, but that crash did look like a bad 'un!
